If the top layer contains the solute, follow these steps after draining the bottom layer:

1. Extract the solution two more times, following the same procedure as the first extraction.
2. Combine the bottom layers.
3. Discard the bottom layers, but be certain that the solute was in the top layers before disposing of any solutions.
