Why reduce the rate of heating?

The temperature should be rising slowly as the melting point of the sample is reached. If the temperature is rising rapidly, accurately recording readings will be difficult. In addition, the temperature of the sample and the temperature read from the thermometer will not be the same if the temperature is changing quickly, so recorded readings will be incorrect.
