Why reduce the rate of heating early?
The Mel-Temp does not respond to changes in the heating rate
instantaneously. When the control knob is turned down, the sample
is still heated rapidly for several seconds. Thus, to accurately
determine a melting point, the control knob should be turned down
so that the rate of heating is slow well before the sample actually
begins to melt.
