Why reduce the rate of heating early?

The Mel-Temp™ does not respond to changes in the heating rate instantaneously. When the control knob is turned down, the sample is still heated rapidly for several seconds. Thus, to accurately determine a melting point, the control knob should be turned down so that the rate of heating is slow well before the sample actually begins to melt.
