Why use a draft shield?

The draft shield prevents air currents from passing over the balance pan. These currents could cause the pan to bounce slightly, which would make the displayed mass unstable. By protecting the balance pan with the draft shield, a single, constant mass reading can be achieved. The balance indicates that the mass reading is constant when a "g" lights up to the right of the numerical reading.
