To heat a nonflammable liquid over a flame:

Set the flask on a wire gauze on a ring stand over the flame. Holding the flask with a tongs is difficult and will probably result in spilling liquid. In addition, if the flask must be heated for more than a few minutes, the tongs will become too hot to handle.
