MISSION STATEMENT

The Rosholt Middle School provides opportunities for students to learn about themselves and those around them. The instructional focus is both academic and humane and child centered rather than teacher centered. We strive to create an atmosphere which challenges students to assume responsibility for their own individual and group behavior with mutually agreed upon expectations, rewards, and consequences. This enhances their self image and self esteem and provides for their success in a supportive, caring environment. Our middle school creates a unique environment that bridges the nurturing environment of the elementary school to the departmentalized structure of the high school.

PHILOSOPHY FOR ROSHOLT MIDDLE SCHOOL

At Rosholt Middle School, the focus of education is to meet the intellectual, emotional, social and physical needs of the early adolescent. Each middle school student is at a critical stage in his or her growth and development, bringing to school a unique variety of experiences and talents. Therefore, we are committed to the process of creating school programs that respect and build upon students' diversity while developing their appreciation of others. We believe the success of our middle school is based upon the encouragement of life-long learning, modeled by a nurturing staff with the active participation of our community.

AGENDA BOOKS

Agenda books are given to students at both the middle school and high school levels. The purpose of these books are to help students to become more organized and responsible for completion of assignments. The first book will be given to students, replacements will cost $5.00.

ATTENDANCE

EXCUSED ABSENCE

When possible a Prearranged Absence/Vacation form needs to be completed prior to leaving school.

For excused absences students will be granted two days to make up work for each day missed with full credit.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE

The student will be expected to make up the work missed, however the teacher will take into account the lateness of the assignment in determining the studentıs grade.

No student may leave the building without parent notification for any reason, except when specifically allowed by the principal. Students must report all reasons for absenteeism to the office prior to 8:20 a.m. Any student leaving school grounds other than at the end of the day must sign out in the office after receiving permission from the principal or secretary. Students who leave the building without prior approval from the office will be considered truant. Students who leave school due to illness in the afternoon of a school day may not attend after school and evening events.

Student Tardy Policy

Step I - Tardy seven times (twelve times second semester)

- Serve four noon hour referrals.

Step II - At fifteen tardies the student will receive a verbal warning as to the consequences for future tardies and one detention until 4 p.m.

Step III - Tardy twenty-five times

- Loss of all after school/evening events privileges (except where student is member of group) for duration of school year. The student may earn his/her after school and evening events privileges back by not being tardy for fifteen consecutive school days.

BIKES

If bikes are ridden to school, they must be parked and preferably locked in the bike rack at the east entrance. They cannot be ridden during the noon hour.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

Riding district buses is a privilege. Students who violate the rules are subject to school discipline that can include loss of bus riding privileges. Only eligible students may ride these buses. Non-eligible students riding the buses will be subject to school discipline.

Activity (Late) Bus

An activity bus is provided by the school district at a nominal cost to provide transportation for students remaining after school for extra-curricular activities or approved school business. The bus runs on those days when a sufficient number of students wish to ride.

The coach of each extra curricular activity shall inform the office of those students eligible to ride. It is then the studentıs responsibility to purchase his/her bus pass. A minimum of eight students is necessary for a late bus to run. Students will learn of the next weekıs late bus schedule before the end of the day on Friday. CODE OF STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities was drawn up and adopted with the idea that every individual has certain rights and responsibilities in respect to other individuals. A studentıs exercise of rights and privileges in the school setting should be protected at all times. No right, however, is absolute. The freedom to exercise oneıs rights ceases when that exercise unduly infringes upon the rights of others. The purpose of this code, then, is to not only protect the rights of the individual but to protect the entire student body.

The successful working of the Code requires exercise of good faith by students, parents, and school district personnel, as well as basic respect for the worth of each individual and his/her ability to contribute to society.

CODE OF STUDENT RIGHTS

1. Each student has the right to an education and to get help from teachers, counselors and administrators.

2. Each student has the right to be free from assault, intimidation, or sexual harassment.

3. Each student has the right to utilize school facilities and programs according to established school regulations and procedures.

4. Each student has the right to hold property free from theft or damage.

5. Each student has the right to expect courteous behavior from other students and school personnel.

6. Each student has the right to determine his/her own dress so long as it is not distracting, inappropriate, indecent, or unsafe. (See Dress Code Guidelines)

7. Each student has the right, with permission, of the school principal or superintendent of schools, to solicit contributions or collect funds for school related purposes.

8. Each student has the right to display, distribute, offer to sell, or sell any item with the permission of the school principal or the superintendent of schools.

9. Each student has the right to form, hold, and express opinions and beliefs, so long as the expression does not disrupt the normal operation of the school.

10. Each student has the right not to be prejudged for an alleged violation of this Code, and has the right to present his/her version before any judgment is made.

11. Each student has the right to appeal an application of the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities through the grievance procedure. (Due Process)

12. Each student has the right to participate in extra-curricular activities so long as he/she does not abuse this right or loses eligibility

CODE OF STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

4. Students have a responsibility to not leave litter or deface the building, books, or equipment.

5. Students have a responsibility to ask for help in a polite manner and at a time that does not deny other students a fair chance to get help.

6. Students have a responsibility to obey rules and use proper means for telling staff members about rules they believe to be unfair.

DISCIPLINARY POLICY AND CORRECTIVE MEASURES

E. Vandalism. Penalty - suspension and restitution and/or detention. Referral may also be made to law enforcement authorities.

F. Any act which might or does affect the health and/or safety of the student body is grounds for immediate suspension and/or expulsion. Examples of this include use of fireworks carrying of or use of dangerous objects and losing of oneıs temper to the point where the student is deterrent to the orderliness of the school.

In all cases, parents will be asked to sign a permission slip for trips outside the District.

FIRE/TORNADO DRILLS

For everyone's safety, tornado and fire drill instructions are posted in each classroom. Teachers are familiar with our emergency plans and will prepare students!

FUND RAISING

Each student has the right to display, distribute, offer to sell, or sell any item with the permission of the school principal or the superintendent of schools.

GUIDANCE SERVICES

The counseling program is for everyone - students, staff, and parents. Counseling provides help with decisions concerning school, friends, family, personal problems and understanding ourselves. Students wishing to see the counselor need to get a pass from their teacher or make an appointment with the counselor.

HALLS

Students are not to be in the halls without a pass when classes are in session. Under no circumstances are students to interrupt a class in order to consult with a teacher or student without the approval of the studentıs teacher. Running, shouting, and/or loitering in the halls is not acceptable behavior. Please do not crowd and push. When passing from class to class, please remain on the right side of the corridor. Waste baskets and recyclable receptacles are placed in many places in most of the halls. Please use them.

HEALTH ROOM/IN-SCHOOL MEDICAL SERVICES

Any boo-boos, owies, or other accidents must be reported to your teacher right away. You will be dragged, carried, or pulled to the health room for immediate First Aid attention. Parents and/or medical services will be contacted if necessary.

HOT LUNCH/CAFETERIA

Each student is issued a hot lunch card, whether they eat hot lunch or not. Students eating hot lunch can deposit hot lunch money in the receptacles conveniently located in various places in the building. Be sure to put money in an envelope and if there is money for more than one member of the family, it must be noted as to how the money is to be credited.

LOCKERS

Each student is assigned a locker at the beginning of his sixth grade year and will keep this locker all through middle school. It, being the property of the school, can be checked without advance notice. Those who abuse the locker by keeping it a mess will be assigned noon detentions. Students are not to put their own locks on their lockers. However, locks rented from the office for $4.00 may be used.

LOST AND FOUND

The office has an extensive assortment of lost and found items, in addition to the lost and found box at the end of the middle school hallway. Look there if you have something missing. Periodically, we will display all items we have accumulated. Articles not claimed at the end of each quarter will be donated to Goodwill or other non-profit charitable organizations.

LOVE

Physical contact of an affectionate nature is not allowed. Any three or more sightings in a two-week period will result in a letter being sent to both sets of parents, with detention/suspension being a subsequent penalty.

MONEY

We cannot be responsible for the safety of money which students bring to school. There is seldom any valid reason for students to have large sums of money in school. Students may request that the office keep money or valuables in the vault for safe-keeping. Students are asked not to collect money for gifts, flowers, etc., for any individual teachers unless approved by the principal.

NUISANCE BEHAVIORS AND ITEMS

To promote the educational process and to safeguard the health and safety of others, the following behaviors will not be tolerated in the building or on the playgrounds: spitting, pushing, shoving, tripping, running, wrestling, perfume fights, leaving black heel marks on floors, yelling, loud noises, bomb threats, spinning tires, etc., and the following items are not allowed: skateboards, squirt guns, exploding pens, snowballs, walkmen, boom boxes, beepers, video games, gum, food in lockers not intended for lunch time, open soda in the halls, candy, toys, sports cards, fire crackers, etc.

Nuisance items will be confiscated. Depending on the severity of the behavior or the extent to which the nuisance item is objectionable, the consequences could range from a warning to expulsion

OUTDOOR RECESS

Outdoor recess is a daily ritual except under undue weather conditions where it is extremely wet or the wind chill factor is such that we are advised to stay indoors. Outdoor recess is held for a period of 20-25 minutes immediately following lunch. Students need this recess time. Only students with valid medical reasons will be allowed to stay in the building. Students should always dress appropriately.

REWARD-MOTIVATIONAL

Each quarter, students will be rewarded with an off-campus trip if they have met the following requirements:

1. No in-school or out of school suspensions during the quarter.

2. No more than two after-school detentions during the quarter.

3. Earned 100 Hornet Points for the quarter.

Students will begin the quarter with fifty points and will be given the opportunity to earn the additional points through appropriate and responsible behavior. Students may be penalized for inappropriate behavior which will result in the loss of Hornet Points.

Those not eligible to attend or who choose not to attend shall be assigned to a supervised study hall. Those not eligible who have an unexcused absence that day (study hall) shall be ineligible the next quarter.

RESTRICTED AREAS

Students may not enter the teacherıs workroom or lounge. The shop building is off-limits to all students during lunch. The middle school and elementary halls and rest rooms are not to be frequented by students except by specific direction. Unauthorized entry into a locker is not allowed. Students are not to be on the stage or in the locker rooms unless either scheduled to be there or given permission to be in those areas. Illegal entry or loitering into the school building during non-school hours shall be referred to the Portage County Sheriff for prosecution.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Students wishing to add a class or drop a class will need to work with the Guidance Office.

SCHOOL HOURS

School hours are from 8:10 a.m. to 3:13 p.m. for middle school. Students are not to arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. as there is no adult supervision. Once the student has arrived at school, students may not leave school grounds unless okayed by the office. At the end of the day, students are to leave school unless they are under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach. Students are not to return unless they are part of an authorized school-supervised activity.

STUDENT WELFARE-SEXUAL HARASSMENT

The school will absolutely not tolerate harassment in any form and will take strong and immediate action when it occurs. Report concerns to a teacher, counselor, principal, or other school employee. See Parent Handbook for school board policy related to harassment issues.

TELEPHONE

The office telephone is for official business only. Do not ask to use it unless it is an emergency. Students not served by the Amherst Telephone Company will have to reverse the charges on non-medical calls made to their home. The hall phone in the high school area may not be used by middle school students during the school day without office permission.

TEXTBOOKS

All textbooks are the property of The Rosholt School District and must be protected by a book cover. Be as careful with them as if they were your own. Since books are loaned to students, it is necessary to charge a fee per student. Textbooks which are lost or mutilated must be paid for by the student to whom they have been loaned. The average cost of one textbook is $30.00.

TRAFFIC IN HIGH-SCHOOL HALLS BY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Middle school students are not to be in the high school halls/area unless on official business. Traffic to and from the music/physical education area shall be via the back doors until the onset of inclement weather. The middle school teachers will determine when their students may use the high school halls to reach the music/physical education areas.
