RATIONALE

While the middle school must be concerned with the academic development of the student, emphasis must also be given to meeting the affective aspects of the student. By affective education, we mean that phase of the educational process that deals with the development of self-concept, living skills, and career planning. Connections with a consistent peer group and concerned adult contribute to a caring middle school environment. An Advisory Program is intended to help students understand themselves as individuals with personal needs and social responsibilities.

Adolescence is challenging. Students in the middle school require special help in their struggle to develop. They face a number of problems because of their changing physical, emotional, psychological, and social nature. Affective education goes beyond academic instruction. It assists the students in realizing their potential capabilities and talents, providing experiences in decision making and learning.
