TEACHER GUIDELINES FOR GOAL SETTING
DAY ONE
PURPOSE AND IMPORTANCE OF GOAL SETTING.... It is important to stress to the students that goals are vital to success in all areas of life. Goal setting is both a process and an attitude. One must know the steps in setting goals, and also must develop the attitude of being a goal setter by developing a life-long habit. Goal setting is important for people of all ages, children and adults alike. It is important to have balance in goals, with goals in all areas of personal, family, social and professional life.
Before one can set realistic goals you need to recognize your personal strengths and weaknesses. Today we are going to do a self evaluation to help determine your strengths and weaknesses. Since this evaluation is personal, it will not be shared with the class or graded.
Distribute manila folders which will be used to file goal materials. Each student will write their name and first hour classroom number and teacher's name on the folder. Students should include this information for both semesters. Hand out the "Student Self-Evaluation" worksheets. After the students have completed the worksheets they should be put in the folders and the folders should be collected.
DAY TWO
ROLE MODELS....The objective on this particular day is to choose and discuss examples of positive role models. You can choose to discuss with the class a personal example or simply use the following example provided:
"My grandfather (grandmother) was one of the most positive role models in my life. He (she) worked hard to take care of his (her) family. He (she) always had time to help friends. His (her) goal was to make life easier for others. He (she) always tried to set a good example."
Hand out the "Role Model" worksheet and student goal folders. Complete. Collect.
DAY THREE
INSTRUCTIONS ON WRITING GOALS .... A goal can be achieved if it is:
- Conceivable.
You need to understand, first of all, what a goal is. Then, you need to be able to determine what your first one or two steps towards reaching your goal will be. For example, maybe one of your goals is to get a B in math class this quarter. Your first step might be .... "I will pay attention and take notes in class." Your second step might be .... "I will keep up with homework assignments." Your third step might be..."I will prepare and study for tests."
- Believable.
You must believe that you can reach your goal. Many people do not attain their goals because they fall into the trap of listening to what other people say. They come to believe that the other people are right and their goals just can not be accomplished. WHEN YOU BEGIN SETTING GOALS, KEEP YOUR GOALS CONFIDENTIAL.
- Achievable.
If you've set for yourself the goal of winning a Grammy award for "Best album of the year" but you have limited musical ability, your goal is nothing more than a wish. You have to "work with what you've got." You have to find and develop your strengths. Your goals must be within your reach.
- Measurable.
Your goals need to be stated in such a way that they can be measured
in time and quantity. "I'll read more books" needs to be revised so it says something along the lines of "I'll read 15 pages of a book (quantity) each night before I go to bed (time)."
A SHORT-TERM GOAL is a goal you might set for a single day or a single class period. The students will complete the Short-Term Goal worksheet (addendum). The teacher will explain the terms used in the worksheet, such as "blocks" and "solutions". It is essential that the students understand the terms and the process to achieve success in writing their goals. This goal deadline will be no later than the same class period of the following day.
Hand out "Short Term Goal" worksheet and the students' goal folders.
Use these directions to instruct the students on how to complete their "Short-term Goals" worksheet.
- Write down your goal on the worksheet and in your assignment notebook.
- Decide how long it will take for you to complete your goal. (No later
than tomorrow's class.
- Imagine yourself reaching your goal.
- When the time frame has elapsed, ask yourself if you have made
your goal.
- Evaluate what worked or did not work for you as you moved towards
your goal.
Complete and collect.
DAY FOUR
EVALUATION OF SHORT-TERM GOALS.... It is important to evaluate goals on a regular basis to feel the success of achievement and to remain focused on the goals. It also gives the opportunity for students to adjust goals if they have been unsuccessful.
Distribute folders and have the students fill out the back of the "Short-Term Goal" worksheet. Then students who were successful with their goals should write another short term goal for tomorrow. Those who were not successful should determine the blocks that interfered with success and determine solutions. Students who were absent will follow the procedure from yesterday's lesson for writing a goal. File and collect.
DAY FIVE
LONG-TERM GOALS.... A Long-Term Goal helps you to stretch yourself in new ways and to use your abilities creatively. Attaining this kind of goal requires you to make adjustments along the way without changing your direction.
- State your goal in written form.
It can be something you want to have, something you want to do, or something you want to be. Writing your goal down keeps your goal before you by programming that goal into your subconscious. Printing your goal may prove to be even more of a stimulator than writing
it, because printing makes more of a visual image in your mind.
- Set a deadline.
Have a time frame in which you plan to accomplish your goal. (i.e by the end of the quarter.)
- Every day imagine yourself accomplishing your goal.
See your goal in your mind as if you have already achieved it. Flash that mental image often and your subconscious mind will set about producing the result you want.
- Monitor your progress.
Identify, periodically, the next steps you will need to take in order to reach your goal.
- When you've completed your goal, evaluate what worked or did not work for you as you moved towards your goal.
Hand out "Long-Term Goal Worksheet" and distribute goal folders. Complete worksheet and transfer long-term goal to assignment notebook. Collect.
