Implementation of Goal Setting Program

The goal setting activities will be implemented in the English classes (including EEN English classes) during the first full week of school. The initial presentation of the curriculum will take place over a five day period, with approximately 15 minutes of class time utilized each day. Thereafter, once a month, class periods will be shortened to create a 20 minute block of time to be added to the first class period. During that time students will evaluate, adjust and write new goals.

Day 1 - Introduction to Goal Setting

The teacher will introduce the topic of goal setting. Included will be purpose of goal setting (see attached addendum). The students will complete the "Student Self-Evaluation". The function of the worksheet is to have students determine their strengths and weaknesses. The determined weaknesses will foster the need to set goals and provide ideas for future goal setting activities. Teachers will distribute manila folders to file goal materials. Each student will write their name and first hour classroom number and teacher's name on the folder. Students should include this information for both semesters.

Day 2 - Positive Role Model

The teacher will briefly review the information from Day 1 about goal setting. The students will complete the "Positive Role Model" sheet (addendum). This activity will illustrate how setting and achieving goals are important to success. The teacher will hold a class discussion on role models and go through the worksheet with an example.

Day 3 - Short Term Goals

The teacher will introduce the topics of:

A short term goal is defined as a goal one may set for a single day or a single class period. The students will complete the "Short Term Goal" worksheet (addendum). The teacher will explain the terms used in the worksheet, such as "blocks" and "solutions". It is essential that students understand the terms and the process to achieve success in writing and achieving their goals. The goal deadline will be no later than the same class period of the following day. Teachers will check each student's goal to determine if the goal is:

Day 4 - Evaluation of Short Term Goal/Short Term Goal Setting

The students will evaluate the degree of success they achieved in the first short term goal setting activity on the "Short Term Goal Setting Evaluation" sheet(addendum). Another short term goal will be set for the following day. The purpose of this is to allow those students who were unsuccessful to attempt another goal after determining the reason for lack of success. It will also allow students who were absent the opportunity to set a short term goal. Those students who were successful on the first short term goal will have the chance to get additional practice in goal setting and, hopefully, experience mastery. The goals will be copied into the student assignment notebooks.

Day 5 - Evaluation of Short Term Goal/Long Term Goal

The students will again complete an evaluation of the (second) short term goal. They will then complete the "Long Term Goal" worksheet (addendum). The deadline for this goal will be no later than the end of the quarter. The goal may be personal, social or academic. The teacher will collect the goal sheets and keep them in the students goal folders. At the end of the five day implementation period the folders will be distributed to the students' first hour teacher.

Monthly Goal Maintenance

On the first Monday of each month the teacher will briefly review the information on goal setting. Goals will be evaluated using the evaluation sheets provided. A new goal may be written.

Since the goals are personal they will not be shared with the class or graded. However, the teachers will be encouraged to incorporate goal setting into the curriculum whenever possible. This may include journal writings, class discussions on goal setting in general, application to curricular content, etc.

The entire school staff will be inserviced on the goal setting curriculum during a special faculty meeting the first week of school. This will allow them to understand the program. All staff will be encouraged to reinforce the importance of goal setting and to implement additional goal setting activities in their classroom.

The English teachers will receive a stipend to attend an inservice prior to the start of the school year on the implementation of the initial program.
