We want our students to not only master the skills being taught, but also the process of evaluating their own work. Therefore, the students will be a part of their own evaluation. Along with the students, it will be necessary for the teachers to be involved in the evaluation process. At times each teacher will evaluate the students work individually. When culminating projects are evaluated, two to five teachers may be involved in evaluating the project together.
How will it be evaluated?
We want the students to clearly know what is required of them when they do their work. For this reason we will develop and use rubrics for each project and skilll that we want the students to master. Each teacher will create their own rubrics for the skills they want their students to master. When a combined project is to be evaluated, the teachers working together will develop the rubrics for that project. These rubrics will be used for instructional direction, self- evaluation, and teacher evaluation.
When will the evaluation be accomplished?
Evaluation will be a continuing process. Since one of our goals is to instruct and teach our students to evaluate their own work, they will be evaluating their work as they put it in their portfolio. Over a period of time they will be able to recognize improvement in the mastery and quality of their work.
The teachers will implement a three-fold evaluation process. The teachers will guide the students in evaluating their work in an ongoing manner. They will evaluate the projects that students complete when they place them in their portfolio and then again when the final project is added to the portfolio. Finally, the teachers will also use the portfolio to determine if the student has mastered the skill being taught.
Portfolio Project Evaluation:
Evaluation will be accomplished from two perspectives. First, we will be able to observe that students have taken ownership of the learning process. Secondly, they will demonstrate mastery of the curricular objectives identified by the pod teachers. Ultimately, students will use their portfolio to support and explain their performance academically and personally.
