A friendly competition to reduce and reuse!!!
Over a 8 week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week's reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more.
February 5 to March 31st
620 schools from across the USA, Mexico, Canada, and the globe are registered. In Wisconsin, 17 schools are participating including UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater, and UW-River Falls to name a few.
RecycleMania is separated into 2 divisions, the Competition Division and the Benchmark Division. UW-Platteville will be participating in the Competition Division this year along with 385 schools across the nation. Waste and recycling data will be collected on the entire campus compared to last year when UW-Platteville participated in the benchmarking division which focused on 4 buildings- Ullsvik Hall, Karrmann Library, Pioneer Student Center, and Ottensman Hall.
Colleges and universities are small cities that consume large amounts of resources and generate much solid waste. Simply stated it's the right thing to do! According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the average person in Wisconsin generates 4.7 pounds of trash each day and recycles only 1.9 pounds of that trash per day. Let's do our part to boost this number of recyclables at UW-Platteville.
Currently the recycling rate on campus is about 40%. Our goal is to achieve a 60% recycling rate campus wide!
