Deist enjoys research opportunity at UW-Madison

Last summer Ben Deist, a junior Biology Major with a Molecular/Genetics Emphasis and a Minor in Biotechnology, spent time in the lab of Dr. Gary Lyons of the Anatomy Department at UW-Madison. While at UW-Madison, Dr. Lyons taught Ben several new techniques for culturing and differentiating mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. These techniques included freezing, thawing, passaging, and purifying mouse ES cells from a feeder layer, making hanging drops, and re-plating hanging drops.

After graduation Ben hopes to enter graduate school at UW-Madison. There is no doubt that Ben's research experience in Dr. Lyon's lab this past summer will serve him well as he pursues his future educational goals. Regarding his research experience Ben states, "I would definitely recommend other biology students to participate in any research experience that they can, not only is it fun, it allows students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real life situations."

First RUSCH Summer a Success!

The first summer experience for students participating in the new RUSCH program was a great success by all accounts. RUSCH, Rural and Urban Scholars in Community Health, is a new program initiated by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison in partnership with UW-Platteville and UW-Milwaukee. The program provides two summers of paid internship opportunities plus a directed academic year experience for selected students. The RUSCH experience is designed to prepare pre-med students for careers practicing medicine in Wisconsin's under-served rural and urban populations. To learn more about this new program, see this story on the University of Wisconsin Health Sciences website, or this news release from UWP. Additionally, please refer to the RUSCH page on our department website for other information on the program.
