Last summer Ben Deist, a junior Biology Major with a Molecular/Genetics Emphasis and a Minor in Biotechnology, spent time in the lab of Dr. Gary Lyons of the Anatomy Department at UW-Madison. While at UW-Madison, Dr. Lyons taught Ben several new techniques for culturing and differentiating mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. These techniques included freezing, thawing, passaging, and purifying mouse ES cells from a feeder layer, making hanging drops, and re-plating hanging drops.
After graduation Ben hopes to enter graduate school at UW-Madison. There is no doubt that Ben's research experience in Dr. Lyon's lab this past summer will serve him well as he pursues his future educational goals. Regarding his research experience Ben states, "I would definitely recommend other biology students to participate in any research experience that they can, not only is it fun, it allows students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real life situations."
