Opportunities to work in the Athletic Training Room!

For those of you who are thinking of going to Physical Therapy School after graduation, I have an opportunity for you that will be highly beneficial in that process. The UWP athletic training room is looking for people just like you who are interested in helping others. We are looking for student workers (who are eligible for Student Work Study) to help us out next semester in the athletic training room. For those who do not qualify, we also look for volunteers for the experience or you can also do an internship and receive credits. We currently have a number of students working in the athletic training room who are Pre-PT, and they have found that helping out here has given them a big head start. Here are some of the benefits mentioned:

1) You get to use hands-on of what you learn in classes and what you will be using in the future.

2) You get that constant refresher of all the muscles, bones, joints, etc.

3) You get the chance to learn the use and purpose of modalities (e.g. stim and ultrasound)

4) The certified athletic trainers here are very willing to help you out with any questions you may have.

5) You learn real world aspects of the job, such as how to work with others and how to handle yourself as a professional.

Bryon Schneider, a recent biology graduate, also had this to say:

“My name is Bryon Schneider. I am a senior majoring in biology with a zoology emphasis. I have worked in the training room as a student athletic trainer for a year, and I would highly recommend it for anyone going into a health field. It gave me the chance to interact with the athletes and develop my communication skills. It also gave me the chance to recognize different injuries, develop rehabilitation skills, use modalities, learn taping techniques, and write evaluation forms. Performing these certain tasks and relating it to my class materials helped me realize how the body reacts before and after an injury. It helped me reinforce my anatomy and physiology classes and applying it in a clinical setting. Being a student athletic trainer will give me an edge when I apply to graduate school since the classes there will relate to the tasks that I performed as a student athletic trainer. I plan to graduate this spring and enter a DPT program either at Northwestern, University of Illinois-Chicago, Midwestern, or UW-Madison. Until then, I will continue to work as a student athletic trainer and learn as much as possible. Again, if anyone is going into a health field, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND becoming a student athletic trainer. I was the best decision I have ever made.”

If this is something any of you would be interested in getting involved in, I encourage you to get a hold of the certified athletic trainer listed below.
