Shapes to the New Design

The web office is currently mocking up many different designs, using different shapes and colors to get different feels. Here are some of the designs that we have come up with so far. Please remember that we are not focusing on using actual logos, school colors, and images. The images that we have used are just to fill in the space of where an (general) image would go. We would appreciate feedback on which designs you prefer over the others.

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING IS AN OPINION! :-) I guess I like #2 better than the rest. I would go with less orange, though. I think that orange looks great when it is minimized and used as an accent color, like in logos, buttons, menu bar, etc. But when it's used for large areas, like an entire left navigation, it begins to have an effect that is more like brown--just too much. You might try using combinations of 2 or 3 blues with 1 to 3 grays and save the orange for small accents. You might try mixing a little kelly green in the mix, too, even though it's not a "UWP color." And of course you can't go wrong with white for the content part of pages.

...and I should mention that #1 is just about as good as #2. ...and even better with less orange. You can't have too much cowbell, but you can have too much orange. :-)

I like a lot of the color combos shown but also agree with the previous comment that orange should be an accent color for a strong blue and white page presence.

My main concern is that we keep a strong UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN identity in addition to noting our PLATTEVILLE heritage/location. As such, the test pages with the UofW text prominently displayed are preferred over the circular logo examples. Keep up the good work!
