Pioneers dump #15 UW-Whitewater

UW-Platteville, ranked 29th in NCAA III wrestling, won seven of 10 matches to defeat 15th-ranked UW-Whitewater 22-13 Friday night in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers improved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches, while the Warhawks fell to 13-7, 2-4 in the final regular-season matches for both teams.

UW-Platteville won six straight matches to take a commanding 19-4 lead. Jeff Gale (133), Dane Droessler (141), Ryan Higgins (149), Jesse Milks (157), Cory Zuberbrier (165) and Brad Zellner (174) all earned victories, with Milks defeating Matt Schuck 18-7 to earn a majority win.

After the Warhawks cut the lead to 19-10, Scott Nicholas secured the win with an exciting overtime victory at 197. Nicholas used a takedown with 13 seconds remaining to beat Jason Johnson 7-6.

The Pioneers and Warhawks will wrestle next in the WIAC championships Sunday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. in UW-La Crosse's Mitchell Hall. Conference champions earn automatic berths into the NCAA III national championships, which are March 2-3 in Dubuque.
