Pioneers nipped by Pointers

UW-Stevens Point, ranked 14th in NCAA Division III, nipped visiting UW-Platteville 20-17 Wednesday night in Berg Gym.

The Pointers remained perfect at 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 5-3, 1-2.

UWP won four of the first six matches, taking a 14-8 lead. Jeff Gale (133), Ryan Higgins (157) and Jesse Milks (165) won by decisions, while Zach Chambers took a forfeit at 141. The Pointers, behind the strength of a Tyler Wozniak pin at 184, rallied to take a 20-14 advantage. The Pioneers' Ryan Rozek beat Mitch Szwet 7-2 at the heavyweight for the final 20-17 score.

UW-Platteville returns to action Saturday at the Dick Walker Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa. A who's who of wrestling is expected to compete, including number one Augsburg and second-ranked Wartburg.
