For the third straight year, the UW-Platteville and UW-Eau Claire wrestling match went down to the final match and last seconds to decide a winner.
The Blugolds' Nick Hoeft scored a takedown with eight seconds left to beat the Pioneers' Cody Weber 4-3 at 285 pounds and clinch a 22-20 UWEC victory Tuesday night in Williams Fieldhouse. The previous two years came down to pins at the heavyweight division, with the Pioneers claiming a 24-22 victory in 2006 and the Blugolds a 22-18 win last January.
UW-Eau Claire improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches, while UWP is now 3-5, 1-3.
The Pioneers won four matches on the night. Jesse Milks, the nation's seventh-ranked wrestler at 157, beat Jon Ames in a technical fall, 17-1. Brad Zellner also won by a tech fall, blanking Ted Sikowski 15-0 at 184. Carsten Carlsen scored a major decision, beating Seth Hendricks 11-3 at 165, while Vinny Alber won by forfeit at 141.
Zellner's win gave the Pioneers a 20-15 lead with two matches remaining. The Blugolds' Josh Holforty, ranked sixth in the country at 197, turned back a valiant effort by Michael Jackowski 11-3, and then the senior Hoeft scored the late decision over the freshman Weber.
The Pioneers honored Jackowski and fellow senior Kyle Luedtke before their last home match of the season. UWP seeks to defend its title at the 44th annual North Central Invitational Friday and Saturday in Naperville, Ill.
