UW-Platteville sucessfully defended its Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational title, placing first out of 10 schools Saturday.

The Pioneers finished ahead of Lakeland, 133.5 to 131.5, for the championship. The Muskies edged the Pioneers 23-17 in their dual meet to begin the season.

"It was nice to get them after losing that dual," Pioneer Coach Chris Walter said. "Lakeland had more wrestlers in the final, but we seized control in the final round. We could have picked up more points had we forfeited matches where we faced each other, but the guys have been working hard in practice, and I wanted to give them chances here."

Three Pioneers won their individual weight classes. Jesse Milks cruised through the 157 class with two pins and a technical fall; Vinny Alber followed up Thursday's pin at UW-La Crosse with the title at 141; and Dillon Pontnack beat teammate Ryan Higgins 4-3 in the final at 149.

Brad Zellner took second at 184, while Matt McGill was second at 141. Spencer Peterson (133), Cory Zuberbier (174), Mike Jackowksi (197) and Cody Weber (285) were third at their weights, and Jeff Gale (133), Carsten Carlsen (165), Erik Sutliff (174) and Paul Wochinski (285) were fourth.

The Pioneers return to action, and to Williams Fieldhouse, Thursday vs. UW-Stevens Point.
