Weekender Profile: Tim Sommers

UW-Platteville’s Tim Sommers is a senior from Suamico, Wis. and Bay Port High School. He is playing his final football game at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 3, when the Pioneers face UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m.

Why did you come to UWP?

“I came to play football and also my aunt (Patti Mitch) works here, so I wasn’t completely on my own. I loved it here. Another reason was not many people from my high school went here, so I was one of only about six students.”

What do you plan to do after graduation?

“I plan on working for a construction company, either in Chicago or probably back home being a project manager or superintendent.”

How did you become a perfect long snapper (for kicks and punts)? Did you do that in high school?

“I did the long snap in high school too. I never really had to work at it. It was always something that was there. In high school we didn’t have one, so we all had to try it. I was good, and that’s where it started.”

What kind of special skills you need to a long snapper?

“You can’t get nervous and you have to be able to handle pressure situations pretty well. I don’t know anything special that I do.”

How was it catching the winning touchdown pass in Germany?

“That was fun. The whole trip was really fun. I got a lot closer to many of the guys on the trip. Overall, playing receiver was a lot of fun.”

What has been your career highlight?

“My career highlight would be playing with all the guys that I came to camp with. There are 27 of us. We have a tight-knit group that we all hang out with. It has been a fun four years, and it has gone by really fast. That was the most fun thing.”
