UW-Platteville's Brian Gallick is a 6-3 senior wide receiver from Gillman. The two-time all-conference selection led the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in receptions last year with 66 in 10 games. He brings the Pioneers into the new season Saturday at the University of Dubuque. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at UD's Chalmer's Field.
There seem to be a lot of new wrinkles in the Pioneer offense this year with a lot of new plays and formations. Was it difficult to big up all the changes?
"Not really. I think we wanted to get away from a one-dimensional look. Using two backs will make it harder for defenses to pick up our schemes. With Tyson (Droessler) and Mike (Genslinger) at running back, they can show their skills."
You led the league in receptions and are a two-time all-conference receiver. Do you feel like you are a marked man?
"Not so much because we have so many other options because of our two-back set and (senior receivers) Joe (Danielson), Mike (Lauritsen) and Derek (Hoff). Teams will have to key on everyone, not just one person. I still practice the same way."
How anxious are you to get out and play someone else?
"I'm really excited. Everyone this year has a real positive attitude that started on the first day of two-a-days."
Have you set any individual goals?
"One would be to be first team all-conference, but as a team we want to win conference."
You start with a much-improved Dubuque team. What kind of challenges will the Spartans present?
"Dubuque played us really tough last year. They have a really good safety, I remember. We just have to make sure we make our reads and assignments."
As a senior, are you aware of things like your last two-a-days, your last season opener and things like that?
"It hasn't hit me as much as it probably will at the end of the season. It has gone by really fast, so I just want to give it one last good year and hope things work for the best."
What have been your career highlights?
"Even though it was a low-scoring game, beating Whitewater two years ago, 7-6. That was one of our bigger games. Also beating Division I-AA Drake was another high point."
What comes after football for you?
"I'll be graduating with a building construction management degree, and I will be going into something commercial or residential in the line of project manager. Residential is what I have the most experience in."
