Lisa Wubben is a sophomore from Kieler, Wis. and Southwestern High School. She averaged 9.8 ppg in 2004-05 then missed all but one-half of the first game last season because of a knee injury. Wubben is currently the Pioneers' second-leading scorer.
How good does it feel to be back on the court?
"It feels really good. I'm starting to get back in the flow now. In the first couple of games, it was just a lot of getting used to it. I learned a lot sitting out last year, watching and seeing what mistakes were being made."
Is there anything that you can't do or that has changed?
"I don't think so but other people coming to games have told me that I favor it. I don't feel like I do, but they say they can see it. I can tell I'm a lot slower, although I've always been slow."
Is your injury why you are playing more inside this year?
"It has more to do with the lack of inside players. It's something I have to step up and do. I feel like I am at a disadvantage because I'm smaller. I try to make adjustments as I go."
Does learning a post position help your overall game?
"I think so, especially when we're playing four out. I usually have a post player coming out to guard me. If I'm out on the perimeter, I can get by them."
What has been your highlight since you've been back?
"Not getting hurt! The whole season has had some good things and some not-so-good things. It's been a lot of fun playing with this group. It seems like we get along a lot better. It's more of a team thing, 'I'll help you get better if you help me.' We're progressing as a team, not as individuals, and we're starting to do things better."
Is it strange to look out and see sometimes you're the oldest person on the court?
"It's really weird. When you think about it, I'm only a sophomore (eligibility-wise), but I used that year to help me learn. I look at everybody on the court as the same age. We're all here for the same reasons. I don't think that age matters for us. They're here because they are capable of playing."
Do you find yourself, with so many good underclassmen, looking ahead to the future?
"What we try and do is learn. If we have a bad game, we try to correct that. In the future, though, when we are seniors and juniors, we know we can't have those mistakes because we will have been around for so long."
