Northern Wisconsin is experiencing peak fall colors this weekend, and the visiting UW-Platteville volleyball team was at the peak of its game as well.
The Pioneers whipped UW-Superior 25-15, 25-22, 25-20 Saturday, a day after sweeping 13th-ranked UW-Eau Claire. It marked the first-ever northern sweep for the Pioneers in eight trips up highways 94 and 53.
Melissa Hillebrand and Samantha Rampart each had 13 kills, and Lisa Bell had 11 for the Pioneers, while Ali Sikic recorded 43 assists. Serving proved to be a huge difference maker for Coach Deb Schulman's club, who had just one error and did not yield a single ace to the Yellowjackets.
The Pioneers improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Yellowjackets--coming off a Friday victory over UW-La Crosse--fell to 7-6, 1-1.
UW-Platteville plays host to a six-team, two-day tournament beginning Friday at 4 p.m. The complete schedule for the weekend is at http://www.uwplatt.edu/athletics/volleyball/2009/uwptourney.htm.
