UW-Platteville saluted seniors Lisa Bell and Stephanie Tronnes before Saturday's last schedule home match, then the Pioneers went out and assured that Bell, Tronnes and company would play at least one more time in Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers beat UW-Stout 25-14, 25-17, 31-29, clinching third-place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a home playoff game Nov. 3 against the league's sixth-ranked team.
Winners of 14 of their last 16 games, the Pioneers improved to 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the WIAC. Stout dropped to 11-13, 1-6.
Melanie Bailiff had 12 kills, and Melissa Hillebrand 10 for UWP, who out-hit the visitors .241 to .066. Ali Sikic directed a crisp offensive attack with 47 assists, while Abby Carey had 10 defensive digs. Both Bell (three solo blocks) and Tronnes (one solo, four assisted blocks) helped control the net for the Pioneers. Samantha Rampart served four aces, inlcuding three in the first set to get the Pioneers rolling.
UWP plays at number-one ranked and undefeated UW-Oshkosh in the final WIAC regular season match Wednesday. The Titans have already wrapped up the league crown and the right to host the WIAC Final Four Nov. 6-7.
