UW-Platteville moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 25-14, 28-30, 25-8, 25-20 win over visiting UW-La Crosse Wednesday.
The Pioneers improved to 15-7 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC, tied with UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls. The Pioneers have already defeated the Blugolds and play host to UW-River Falls Friday night in an important conference match. The two top teams in the WIAC (currently UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater) receive byes in the six-team league tournament, while the third- and fourth-seeds will host first-round playoff matches.
Briana Kaiser had 16 kills and Melissa Hillebrand 14 for the pink-clad Pioneers during the Dig for the Cure Match, which raised money for breast cancer awareness and treatment programs. Hillebrand now has 999 career kills, one shy of becoming the 10th UWP player to reach 1,000.
Leslie White and Abby Carey had 21 and 19 digs, respectively, with Carey adding three service aces. Both Lisa Bell and Kaiser had four blocks.
Brianne Stankus paced UW-L (4-18, 1-5) with 14 kills, and Katie Gunderson added 10.
The Pioneers face the Falcons Friday at 7 p.m. and then close the home schedule against UW-Stout Saturday at noon for Alumni and Senior Day.
