The fourth-largest volleyball crowd in Williams Fieldhouse history saw the 20th-ranked UW-La Crosse Eagles beat UW-Platteville 26-30, 33-31, 30-21, 30-27 Wednesday night.
The Homecoming gathering is the second largest crowd in NCAA III this season and marks the ninth straight year the UWP Yell Contest match has been the nation's first or second most attended regular season contest.
The Eagles improved to 16-4 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 16-7, 0-3.
Lisa Bell registered a match-high 21 kills, while Rachel Chapman had 18 for the Pioneers, who had 60 kills to the Eagles' 56. Brianne Stankus topped La Crossse with 19 kills. Emily Walker came up with 24 digs, while Chapman had 22 for the Pioneers, who also received 58 assists from Kelly Laschinger.
The Pioneers and Eagles continue WIAC play this weekend against the same opponents. On Friday, UWP plays host to UW-River Falls, and UW-L faces UW-Stout, both at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the visiting teams switch sites, as Stout comes to Williams Fieldhouse, and Falls visits Mitchell Hall for noon starts.
