UW-Platteville beat UW-Eau Claire 3-0 to claim the championship of the Impact Sports/Nike Invitational Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.
Both the Pioneers and Blugolds won their first three matches, setting up the championship showdown in the last scheduled match of the two-day tournament. The Pioneers defeated the Blugolds 30-18, 30-25, 30-24 behind 14 kills from Rachel Chapman, 32 assists from Kelly Laschinger and 14 digs from Emily Walker.
UWP, who beat Cornell 3-2 and UW-Stout 3-0 Friday night, opened Saturday's play with a 30-19, 30-22, 29-31, 30-16 win over Lake Forest. Chapman led the way with 22 kills against the Foresters, while Lisa Bell had 15 and Brooke Temperly 11, and Rochelle Ripp made 26 digs.
Chapman, who had 70 kills in the four matches, and Ripp, who had 73 digs while spearheading an outstanding defensive effort, were named to the all-tournament team.
The Pioneers face UW-La Crosse Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the annual Homecoming Yell Contest, which has been the highest attended-match in the NCAA III regular season in each of the last eight years. A school-record 1,106 fans crammed Williams Fieldhouse in 2005, while last year's match drew 1,068.
