Pioneers sixth at Wartburg

UW-Platteville's men's and women's track and field teams both placed sixth in their respective standings at the Wartburg Select Invitational.

The host Knights won the 13-team women's event with 194 points, while Nebraska Wesleyan finished atop 11 other men's teams with 176 points. The UWP women had 66 points and the men 52 at the site of this year's national outdoor championships.

The UWP women won four of the 22 events: Marcia Taddy in the 1,500-meter run in 4:50.02; Carrie Morschauser in the high jump at 5-6; Kristin Campbell in the discus throw at 128-1; and the 4x800 relay team at 9:42.44. Mary Johnson was second in the 200 dash in 25.60 and third in the 100 at 12.38.

The Pioneer men won two events. Tyler Sigl put himself in position to come back to Waverly, Iowa, for nationals, winning the 10,000-meter run in an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 31:06.55. Erik Bakkum won the grueling decathlon, beating nine other competitors in the 10 events. Tim Jankowski also provisionally qualified in the pole vault, placing second in 15-2.75. Jim Uppena added a third-place finish in the hammer throw at 157-11.
