Jim Uppena increased his NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw, while Kyle Stangel reached the provisional mark in the 800-meter run to highlight UW-Platteville's track and field weekend.
Uppena threw the hammer 175-10 to place sixth at UW-La Crosse. Stangel's 800-meter time of 1:53.35 came at North Central College, where he was fourth.
Five Pioneers competed in Illinois, while six more were at UW-La Crosse, hoping to reach national qualifying marks.
The entire NCAA III national championship field will be announced Tuesday on http://www.raceberryjam.com/. Marcia Taddy and Tyler Sigl are automatically qualified for the championships, while nine more Pioneers have provisional marks, with several high enough up the list to probably qualify them for nationals.
The national championships are Thursday through Saturday at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
