Pioneers fare well at home, on the road

UW-Platteville track and field fared well both at home and on the road.

The Pioneers played host to the non-scored UWP Open Saturday that featured eight schools. Another group of Pioneers competed at the University of Northern Iowa's UNI-dome Open Friday night.

The host Pioneers won 10 events Saturday, including six on the men's side. Ryan Kleimenhagen, pushed by teammate Andres Young, ran the 600-meter dash for the first time and won it in a school-record 1:20.01. Other men's winners included John Leuck in the 3,000 (9:04.03); Ben Zizis in the 55-hurdles (8.13); Tom Jankowski in the pole vault (15-3); Brian Steingraber in the shot put (49-11.25); and Jim Uppena in the weight throw (55-7.5).

The women won four events: Tracy Wilber in the 55-meter dash, 7.50; Morgan Lewis in the high jump, 4-11; Beth Ambrosius in the pole vault, 10-10; and Carrie Morschauser in the triple jump (35-8.87).

In Cedar Falls Friday, the Pioneers won two events at the highly competition Uni-Dome Open. Nick Fix won the triple jump in 45-7, just shy of the NCAA III provisional qualifying mark, while Kleimenhagen won the mile in 4:11.15.

Jessica Davis was second in the women's 3,000-meter run in 10:40.62. Finishing third were Marcia Taddy in the 400 dash in 59.29, Stephanie Martin in the 800 in 2:20.28, and Russell Goessel in the 3,000 in 8:48.34. Fourth-place finishes were turned in by Jim Uppena in the weight throw (56-2), Morschauser in the high jump (5-3), Ambrosious in the pole vault (10-6), and Anissa Szesterniak in the mile run (5:19.06).
