Pioneers set records during season opener

Eight men's teams and seven women's teams competed in the Platteville Open at the Williams Fieldhouse on Saturday. Even though there were no teams scores taken, the Pioneers excelled in their season opener.

The Pioneers broke two school and three fieldhouse records in Saturday's meet. The first record fell as Jackie Mulrooney won the 5,000 meters in 17:33.81 for a new Williams Fieldhouse record. Marcia Taddy later won the mile in a time of 5:11.20 breaking school and Williams Fieldhouse records. Senior Ryan Kleimenhagen broke the school record and Williams Fieldhouse records in the 800 meters with an NCAA national championship automatically qualifying time of 1:52.38.

The women had a total of seven first-place finishers. Stephanie Martin won the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.71. The 4x200 meter relay finished first with its time of 1:50.85. Morgan Lewis won the high jump and Beth Ambrosius won the pole vault with heights of 4-11.75 and 10-03.25, respectively. Carrie Morchauser won the triple jump with a jump of 33-07.25 and also finished second in the high jump.

The men had four first-place and three second-place finishes. Tyler Sigl just missed a school record with his win in the 3,000 meters, his time was 8:38.60. Tim Jankowski jumped 14-9 for a victory in the pole vault. The 4x400 meter relay team that consisted of Josh Pluemer, Andres Young, Erik Bartleson and Ryan Kleimenhagen won its race in a time 3:27.63. The 4x200 meter relay team took second with a time of 1:37.41, and Nate Richardson finished behind Kleimenhagen in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.84.

Both the men's and women's team will be compete at UW-Whitewater Friday.
