The UW-Platteville men's track and field team, which ended the indoor season by placing third in the NCAA III national championships, began the outdoor season in a strong fashion, too, winning the 15-team Washington University Invitational Friday and Saturday in St. Louis.
UWP, behind four event champions and a lot of depth, rolled up 134 points, out-distancing second-place Central (Iowa) by 35. The Pioneer women also had a good showing, taking seventh among 15 schools. Host Wash. U. won the women's title.
Kyle Stangel and Cam Klein went the distance in two events each to lead the men. Stangel edged Klein to win the 1,500-meter run (4:01.34 to 4:01.79), then Klein won the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:41.23, and Stangel took third in the 800 in 1:56.97.
Tyler Sigl cruised to the 5,000-meter run title in 14:26.97, breaking his own school record, while Mitch Spees won the 400 hurdles in 55.17.
Corey Digman had a strong day in the weight events. He was runner-up in the shot put at 46-6.25 and fourth in both the discus at 148-8 and the hammer at 165-1.
Also taking second were Ben Zizis in the 110-meter high hurdles at 14.94, Jessica Scott in the 5,000 at 17:34.21, Emma Dreis in the 1,500 at 4:50.05, and Alison Ross in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.75.
Dan Meyer (155-1) and Adam Buss (149-6) were third and fourth in the javelin throw. Jon Balciar was third in the pole vault at 14-5.25, while placing fourth were Sadie Sime in the high jump at 4-9.75 and Ashleigh Waltz in the pole vault at 10-0.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday at the Wartburg Invitational.
