Against very strong competition, UW-Platteville won three events and provisionally qualified three others for the NCAA III championships during the Wartburg Select Saturday in Waverly, Iowa.

The men were fifth of 10 teams, but just one-half point behind Western Illinois for fourth, while the women were eighth. Western Illinois won the women's title, and St. Thomas took the men's.

The Pioneers were strong in the steeplechase, with Jessica Scott winning the 3,000-meter women's run in 11:28.18, and Cam Klein finishing second in the men's in 9:36.50.

Kyle Stangel followed up his 1,500-meter run win last weekend at Washington University by winning the 800 run in 1:54.2. Cody Helgeson captured the high jump, clearing 6-5.25.

Provisionally qualifying for nationals were Ben Zizis in the 110 hurdles in 14.86, Scott Howard in the pole vault at 15-11 and Corey Digman in the hammer at 172-10. Digman was also third in the shot put at 47-8 and fourth in the discus at 144-11.25.

Also placing third Saturday were Alison Ross in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.23 and Mitch Spees in the 100 dash in 11:05. Spees was also fourth in the 400 hurdles in 56.50 and teamed with Zizis, Cody Egan and Matt Bischoff to take fourth in the 4x100 relay in 43.20.

The Pioneer Invitational is set for Saturday, April 12, at the UWP Outdoor Track, with competition beginning at approximately 11 a.m.
