UWP Track and Field

UW-Platteville won five events while helping christen Wartburg's new indoor track Saturday in Waverly, Iowa.

UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, and Nebraska Wesleyan University joined the host Knights for their first meet inside the newly-constructed fieldhouse at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center. La Crosse won the women's meet, while Nebraska Wesleyan captured the men's. UWP was fourth in both team rankings.

Jessica Scott automatically qualified for the NCAA III national championships, winning the 800-meter run in 2:12.2. Pioneer teammate Lindsey Vick finished second in the race at 2:22.6. Scott, a junior, qualified for nationals for the third straight season. The indoor nationals are March 14-15 at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

The Pioneers' distance medley relay team also earned an auto qualifying time. Cam Klein, Adam Buss, Tony Kilburg and Tyler Sigl finished in 10:00.01. The DMR team was second to UW-La Crosse in the race.

Corey Digman was a provisional qualifier on the men's side, winning the weight throw in a season-best 54-6. The junior also placed second in the shot put at 48-10.

Jon Balciar and Jacob Friberg were first and second in the pole vault, with Balciar winning at 14-5.5, and Friberg runner-up at 13-11.75.

Ben Zizis won his hurdle event for the second straight week with the exact same time, taking the 55 hurdles in 7.76. The men's 4x400 relay team was victorious in 3:25.99, edging Wartburg's quartet by three-hundredths of a second.

The Pioneer men went 2-3-4 in the mile run, led by Aaron Whalen at 4:20.2, Tyler Sigl in 4:22.4, and Patrick Klein in 4:22.8.

Emma Dreis was second in the women's 3,000-meter run in 10:16.3, while Jason Garvens was runner-up in the men's 3,000 at 8:48.1. Brandon Harms finished third in the 800 meters at 1:59.5.

Placing third, but in a provo qualifying time of 3:58.7, was the 4x400 relay team of Scott, Liz Baker, Alison Ross, and Bobbi Arand.

The Pioneers will host the UWP/Nike Impact Sports Invitational Saturday, with field events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. and track at 10:45.
