The UW-Platteville track and field teams turned in strong performances while tuning up for next weekend's WIAC championships.

The UWP men took second out of 16 teams, while the Pioneer women were fourth of 10 schools at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational Saturday.

The men won three events for their runner-up finish. Beb Zizis lowered his NCAA III provo time in the 55 hurdles to 7.73; Tyler Sigl won the mile in 4:17.23; and Cody Helgeson won the high jump with a season-best 6-6. Corey Digman added a second-place finish in the shot put at 48-8.75 for the Pioneers, who scored 102.5 points. The host Pointers won with 166.5, followed by UWP, UW-Eau Claire with 71.5, UW-Oshkosh with 71.5, and Carroll with 57.5.

Taking thirds were Mitch Spees in the 200 meters (22.91), Adam Buss in the 400 (50.19), Brandon Harms in the 800 (1:58.33), Austen Scudder in the 3,000-yard run (8:57.71), Scott Howard in the pole vault (14-7.5), and the 4x400 relay (3:20.9)

UW-Oshkosh won the women's title with 177.5 points, followed by UW-Eau Claire with 97, UW-Stevens Point 88, UW-Platteville 72, and Carroll 70.

Three women took seconds to pace the Pioneers: Liz Baker in the 200 at 26.74; Jessica Scott in the 400 at 58.93; and Taylor Fry in the 55 hurdles at 8.89. Alison Ross was third in the 200 at 26.87, and Gabrielle Ethier triple jumped 34-7.5 to take third.

The conference championships are Friday and Saturday at UW-Superior.
