Ben Zizis won the 55-meter hurdles, and Cody Helgeson claimed the high jump, and a relay team was victorious, highlighting UW-Platteville's day at the Warren Bowlus Invitational Saturday at UW-Stout in Menomonie.

Zizis crossed the finish line in 7.76, just missing an NCAA III provisional qualifying time by one-hundredth of a second. He beat the University of Minnesota's Luke Lilovich, second in 7.83.

Helgeson high-jumped 6-5, tying the host's Kendall Wade, but winning on fewer attempts.

The men's 4x400 relay team also won, edging UW-Eau Claire's quartet by seven-hundredths of a second. The Pioneer foursome won in 3:27.41.

No team scores were kept in the meet that featured UWP, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, Minnesota, Michigan Tech on the men's side. Those same schools were joined by St. Scholastica, UW-Stevens Point and Hamline for the women's meet.

The Pioneers went 2-3-4 in the men's 400-meter dash, with Adam Schulte (51.22), Adam Buss (51.33) and Mitch Spees (51.45) putting on strong shows. Also placing third and fourth were Scott Howard and John Balciar in the pole vault (both at 14-6.25), and Corey Digman (53-6.5) and Tom Friederick (51-1.5) in the weight throw. Michael Fischer added a third in the triple jump at 41-9.25, and Digman was fourth in the shot put at 48-6. The men's 4x200 (1:35) was second of fourth teams.

For the women, Liz Baker was fourth in the 200 in 27:32, and Tabitha Smith fourth in the shot put at 38-8.25. The 4x200 relay team was second and the 4x400 third.
