Several UW-Platteville underclassmen, including two event winners, stole the spotlight for the Pioneer track and field teams at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
Sophomore Emma Dreis won the 800-meter run, beating 27 other female runners with a time of 2:13.59, while freshman Jon Balciar won the men's pole vault with a 14-6 effort.
The Pioneer men were second out of 18 teams, while the women finished eighth in the team standings. Rend Lake College won the men's competition with 121 points, while the Pioneers scored 108.5. Host Wash U. won the women's team title.
Sophomore Corey Digman finished runner-up in two events, placing second in the shot put at 46-9.5 and in the discus at 151-8, while classmate Dan Meyer was second in the javelin at 150-2.
Jessica Scott (18:13.46) and Lindsey Vick (18:35.66) were second and third in the 5,000-meter run.
Also for the men, Ben Zizis was third in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.68, Mike Schmidt third in the high jump at 6-4. The Pioneers placed in the top eight in almost every event, leading to their second-place team finish.
On the women's side, Kim Piggot finished second in the triple jump at 35-0.5, while Ashleigh Waltz was third in the pole vault at 10-6, and Alison Ross placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.91.
