University of Wisconsin-Platteville standouts Marcia Taddy and Tyler Sigl earned the Midwest Regional Athletes of the Year awards for the 2007 Division III outdoor track and field season, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.
The Pioneer pair repeated the Midwest Regional honors they earned in the 2006 cross country season. Taddy also was the Midwest Regional and NCAA III national athlete of the year during the 2007 indoor track and field season.
Taddy won the 800 and 1,500 at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet and enters the NCAA Division III Championships with the nation's best time in the 1,500 at 4:22.56. She has the nation's second-fastest time in the 800 (2:09.18). Taddy clocked 4:23.75 at the Stanford Invitational 1,500 despite falling at one point in the race. The junior from Two Rivers won three national titles at the indoor championships.
Sigl won the 1,500 and 5,000 at the WIAC Championships, giving him four conference titles for the 2006-2007 school year. He previously won the WIAC cross country and indoor 5,000 titles. Sigl, a junior from Seymour has the nation's second-fastest Division III time in the 10,000 meters (30:03.02) and fifth-fastest clocking in the 5,000 (14:27.02). He finished third in the 5,000 at last year's NCAA outdoor meet.
UW-La Crosse's Brent Erickson won the men's coach of the year, while the Eagles' Pat Healy was the women's honored coach. Earning the region's field athletes of the year were UW-Stevens Point's Kyle Steiner and UW-River Falls' Jillian Crandall.
The NCAA III national championships are Thursday through Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.
