The UW-Platteville track and field teams began their outdoor seasons in style Saturday, with the men placing second out of 15 teams, and the women taking third of 14 schools at the Wash. U. Invitational in St. Louis.
The men scored 111 points, finishing just three behind champion Monmouth. Wash. U. won the women's team title with 209 points, followed by Central with 146 and UW-Platteville with 106.
The Pioneers won seven events, including a pair by Mary Johnson. The senior sprinter captured the 100 in 12.76 and the 200 in 25.77.
Two NCAA III provisional qualifying marks were reached on the day. Carrie Morschauser tied Lori McReynolds' 1985 school record with a 5-6 high jump, while Ben Zizis won the 110 hurdles in 14.86.
Jim Uppena won the discus throw in 146-0 and placed second in the hammer in 161-9, while Tim Jankowski took the javelin with a best throw if 183-11.
Marcia Taddy and Mayia Corcoran finished first and second in the 400, with Taddy winning in 58.2, and Corcoran placing second in 59.11.
The women's 4x400 relay team set a new school record, breaking four minutes for the first time ever. The Pioneers were second with a time of 3:59.24.
Corey Digman and Brian Steingraber were second and third in the shot put, respectively, with throws of 49-0.25 and 48-3. Emily O'Brien was third in the women's shot at 40-8.75.
Tyler Sigl was second in the 800 run in 1:55.14, and also turning in third-place finishes were Kim Pickett in the triple jump at 34-6.75, Alison Ross in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.06, and Cam Klein in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:41.17.
