Pioneers win three events at Wartburg

The UW-Platteville men's track and field team placed fourth and the Pioneer women were sixth despite facing some of the Midwest Region's top squads Saturday at the Wartburg Select Invitational in Waverly, Iowa.

Wartburg won both team titles. The Knights totalled 193 points to win the men's meet, followed by Monmouth with 150, Central 105, UWP 80.5, Gustavus Adolphus 66, Augusta 65, Loras 51.5, Buena Vista 45, Carleton 43 and Grinnell 16.

Wartburg topped UW-La Crosse for the women's title, 180-170.5. Central was third with 93.5, followed by Gustavus Adolphus 66.5, Monmouth 58.5, UWP 57, Loras 56, St. Olaf 49, Grinnell 21 and UW-Whitewater 30.

The Pioneers won three events, including an NCAA automatic qualifying performance by Marcia Taddy. She won the 1,500-meter run in 4:33.46, winning by eight seconds and also coming within a second of Wartburg legend Missy Buttry's meet record.

Carrie Morschauser won the high jump by two inches, clearing 5-3, and Cam Klein won the 1,500 in 3:57.76, the only competitor to break four minutes,

Tyler Sigl was second in the 5,000-meter run in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:46.87. The top three runners finished within six-tenths of a second of each other, a rarity in races that long. Nick Fix added a second-place finish in the triple jump at 45-9, while Matt Ammerman was runner-up in the shot put at 46-6.75, and Jim Uppena was third in the discus at 151-11 and the hammer throw at 166-11.

Mary Johnson was second in the 200 at 25.76 and third in the 100 at 12.58, while Beth Ambrosious was third in the pole vault at 10-8.

The Pioneers next compete at the North Central Invitational Friday in Naperville, Ill.
