UW-Platteville showed off its track and field depth at the Augustana Meet of Champions.
Despite having just three individual champions, the Pioneers scored well in almost every event. The women placed third of seven teams with 121.5 points, while the men were fifth in their meet with 103. UW-Whitewater won the men's title with 245.5, while UW-Oshkosh was the women's champion with 299.
Depth was the key for the decathlon, as both Eric Bakkum and Nathan Wells provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in that event. Bakkum won with 6,067 points, edging Wells, who had 6,050. Athletes must reach 6,000 for the provo mark in the grueling 10-event challenge.
Tyler Sigl won the 1,500-meter run in 3:54.42 for another provo mark, while Carrie Morschauser won the high jump in 5-3.25.
Besides Wells, Pioneers who placed second were Mary Johnson in the 100 in 12,64; Jessica Scott in the 800 in 2:20.29, Nick Fix in the triple jump at 44-6.5 and the women's 4x100 relay team in 50.41.
Placing third were Aaron Whalen in the 10,000 (32:52.04), Ben Zizis in the 110 hurdles (14.93), and Russ Goessl in the 5,000 (15:31.69).
