Pioneers have strong showings in Oshkosh

The UW-Platteville men's and women's track and field teams continued their strong early-season performances as both teams placed second at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational.

The women, behind four individual winners, scored 153.5 points. The host Titans won with 303, followed by the Pioneers, St. Norbert 58, Carroll 47, Lawrence 35 and Ripon 26.5.

The top two spots were the same on the men's side, as UW-Oshkosh scored 326, the Pioneers, with two individual champions, 134.5, Ripon 68, St. Norbert 42, Lawrence 36, Carroll 31.5 and Wisconsin Lutheran 14.

All six of the Pioneer victors set season-best marks, including Beth Ambrosius, who again broke her own school mark in the pole vault at 11-5.75. Mary Johnson won the 55-meter dash in 7.43, while Jessica Scott captured 800 in 2:16.49, and Lindsey Vick was first in the mile at 5:19.88. Scott's time in the 800 was a NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying time.

On the men's side, Ben Zizis won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.93, while Russ Goessl took home the 3,000-meter run title in 8:46.88.

At Nebraska

Two Pioneers competed at the University of Nebraska over the weekend against NCAA Division I competition.

Marcia Taddy placed ninth among 35 runners in the 800 run at 2:15.08 Saturday, while Jim Uppena was 13th of 23 competitors Friday in the weight throw with a distance of 56-8.75.

Taddy's mark was a NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying time, while Uppena has already automatically qualified for nationals.
