UW-Platteville's men were second, and the women fourth behind three record-breaking performances at the UW-Whitewater Invitational Saturday.
The Pioneers won three men's events, including one by a school record and an NCAA III automatic qualifying mark. Jim Uppena heaved the 35-pound weight 61 feet, 7 inches. He qualified for nationals by a full foot and broke one of the Pioneers' records considered almost untouchable. Bryan Cunningham held the old UWP indoor record of 60-1/75 for 10 years until Uppena unleashed his toss Saturday. Uppena placed fourth in last year's NCAA III nationals with a best throw of 58-11.5.
The Pioneer women had two records while placing second in their events. Beth Ambrosious was runner-up in the pole vault at 11-3, surpassing her old school record of 11-0.25. The 4x200 relay team finished in 1:47.04, breaking a 2002 mark of 1:47.82. The quartet included Tracy Wilber, Alison Ross, Heidi Heberlein and Mary Johnson.
Nick Fulton captured the 5,000-meter run in 15:10.45, winning by 24 seconds.
The Pioneer women had two individual winners. Johnson won a highly competitive 55-meter dash in 7.54, nipping among others, teammate Wilber, fourth at 7.60.
Carrie Morschauser won the high jump at 5-4.5, beating 13 other jumpers. Russell Goessl and Bob Dillis had impressive distance runs, placing second and third in the 3,000 meters at 8:50.27 and 8:45.97, respectively.
Ben Zizis was runner-up in the 55 hurdles, while Scott Howard and Nathan Wells tied for second in the pole vault at 14-2.5.
The host Warhawks finished first among 15 men's teams with 192.33 points, while the Pioneers scored 116, UW-Stevens Point 101.66, UW-Eau Claire 82 and Carthage 35 to round out the top five.
UW-Eau Claire won the 13-team women's meet with 139 points, while Winona State scored 108, UW-Stevens Point 98, Carthage 94, UW-Platteville 72 and UW-Whitewater 59.
