Mulrooney named WIAC athlete of the week

UW-Platteville's Jackie Mulrooney earned the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner of the week award after her record-breaking performance in the Platteville Open Saturday.

Mulrooney, a junior from Hartland (Arrowhead) won the 5,000-meter run in 17:07.65, breaking her own Williams Fieldhouse record by 25 seconds and Keri Wells' 1999 school record of 17:12.83. Mulrooney's time would normally automatically qualify her for the NCAA Division III Championships, but because she ran in a combined race with the men, the national mark does not count.

The Pioneer all-American has run competitively twice this season and broken Williams Fieldhouse records each time. She took down the 3,000-meter mark in the Alumni/Intrasquad Meet Dec. 10, becoming the first female ever to break the 10-minute barrier here.

Mulrooney and her Pioneer teammates will compete in the UW-Whitewater Invitational Saturday.
