Pioneers have dominating open meet

The UW-Platteville track and field teams began the season in dominating fashion, winning 20 events at the Platteville Open Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.

One fieldhouse and two school records fell in the seven-team meet, which included Ashford, Clarke, Coe, Iowa Central, Mount Mercy and the Milwaukee Track Club.

Jackie Mulrooney won the 5,000-meter run in 17:07.65, breaking her own facility record by 25 seconds and Keri Wells' 1999 school record of 17.12.83. Mulrooney's time would normally automatically qualify her for the NCAA championships, but because she ran in a combined race with the men, the national mark does not count.

Tyler Sigl took another bite out of Ryan Kleimenhagen's Pioneer records, winning the 3,000-meter in 8.32.73. He bested the old record by nearly six seconds.

Jim Uppena won two events, including an NCAA provisional qualifying effort in the weight throw in 59-6.25. He also captured the shot put in 50-9.25.

Other female winners for the Pioneers included Tracy Wilber in the 55-meter dash, Mary Johnson in the 200, Mayia Corcoran in the 400, Lindsey Vick in the 800, Marcia Taddy in the mile, Jessica Scott in the 3,000, Carrie Morschauser in the high jump, Beth Ambrosious in the pole vault, Taylor Johnson in the long jump, Ashleigh Waltz in the triple jump and both the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Joining Sigl and Uppena as first-place male finishers were Cam Klein in the mile, Ben Zizis in the 55 hurdles, Scott Howard in a Pioneer-dominated pole vault.
