UW-Stevens Point out-slugged visiting UW-Platteville 14-13 in a wild game featuring eight home runs Thursday afternoon. The 25th-ranked Pointers completed the sweep with a 9-1 win.
Tera Burr, Nikki Hansen, Becky Swanson and Lindsay Weigand all homered for the Pioneers (8-14 overall, 2-3 in the WIAC), but were matched by Laura Van Abel, Danielle Ashbeck, Chelsea McIlquham and Brittany Zelenka for the Pointers (20-6, 6-4).
The Pioneers rallied from 9-3 and 12-7 deficits to take the lead. Hansen's three-run home run gave UWP a 13-12 advantage in the top of the sixth, but Van Abel's run-scoring single broke a 13-13 tie in the bottom. Allison Dorn retired the Pioneers in order in the seventh for the win.
UWP ripped off 12 hits, inlcuidng three by Burr. Patty Meoska doubled and tripled in the contest. The Pointers' had 14 hits, including four by Van Abel.
The home team won the second game due to the eight-run rule in the fifth. Lindsay Weigand had the lone Pioneer hit against Kayla Kastenmeier. Korryn Brooks had three of the UWSP seven hits.
The Pioneers play host to UW-Superior Saturday UW-Eau Claire Sunday, with both doubleheaders starting at noon.
