Maggie Medlicott throws to the final batter
of her no-hitter against Superior

One of the oldest--and hardest to follow--diamond superstitions is not to talk about a no-hitter while it is in progress.

UW-Platteville did not have that problem Saturday. Not a soul in the dugout knew Maggie Medlicott was working on a gem.

Medlicott beat UW-Superior 6-0, yielding no hits to the Yellowjackets.

"Thanks, ah, wait, I did what?" Medlicott said after the game when told about making history.

The senior right-hander recorded the program's seventh no-hitter ever and the first seven-inning no-hitter since 1985.

"I had no idea," she said. "I was just thinking 'don't let them score.' Patty (Meoska, the catcher) and I were just talking during the game, 'nine more outs', then six, then three."

The Yellowjackets' best chance for a hit came in the fifth, when Braidee Rix popped up to short left. Bridgette Clark came racing in and dove for the ball, securing the out.

"All the outfielders made really good plays," Medlicott said, "and the infielders stopped all the balls."

The Pioneers did not commit an error behind her, making 13 assists and seven fly-ball catches. Medlicott caught the final ball on a line drive.

Superior committed six errors, giving up five unearned runs. Tera Burr had half the Pioneers' six hits, driving in two runs.

In the nightcap, Katie Sutter hit a first-inning grand-slam and earned the victory on the mound as the Pioneers completed the sweep with a 9-0 win.

Sutter's blast was the 10th grand-slam in Pioneer history and the first since Becky Swanson's against UW-Whitewater in 2005.

On the mound, Sutter allowed just three hits in a game ended by the eight-run rule. Nikki Hansen added a two-run double for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers (10-14, 4-3 in the WIAC) play host to UW-Eau Claire Sunday at noon, while the Yellowjackets (11-15, 0-6) play at UW-La Crosse.
