After UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse played home run derby Friday, the Pioneers turned to small ball to rally for an 11-4 victory and a split of an entertaining doubleheader. The host Eagles slugged out a 10-5 win in the opener.
The Pioneers, who had scored their first eight runs of the doubleheader via the longball, broke open a 4-4 game in the sixth inning of the nightcap with six runs on three singles and aggressive base-running that forced two Eagle throwing errors. Rightfielder Stefany Delifer delivered the big blow, singling up the middle with the bases loaded to score a pair of runs for a 6-4 lead. Pitcher Katie Sutter added an RBI single in the inning.
"Those are the little things we need to do every day," Coach Heather Townsend said. "This last game was pretty rewarding. We finally played the Pioneer way."
UW-Platteville improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after the second-game victory, while the Eagles finished the day at 14-5, 2-2.
In the opener, Sutter hit a two-run home and Lindsay Weigand blasted a three-run shot, as the Pioneers and Eagles went into the sixth tied 5-5. UW-L's Sara Pfeifer hit a three-run home run, and two batters later Cara Salm brought home two more with another HR for a 10-5 win.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead on Becky Swanson's missile over the left-field, scoring three. The Eagles' Liz Bradley tied the score in the fifth with a two-run homer before UWP rallied with the big sixth-inning.
Nikki Hansen had a double and a triple in the second game, coming around to score on her triple when the Eagles misplayed the ball at third. Sutter and Weigand each had two hits, and Swanson scored three times.
Sutter scattered seven hits to earn the victory.
"Katie held herself together real well and Carley (Adams, the catcher) took charge out there, too," Townsend said.
