| Tera Burr awaits the throw on a steal attempt |
The University of Dubuque rallied for six runs in the seventh inning, completing a doubleheader sweep with a 7-3 victory over host UW-Platteville Tuesday. The Spartans took advantage of Pioneer miscues in the first game to post an 8-5 win.
The Pioneers forged a 3-1 lead in the nightcap. Dru Schneider doubled and scored on Nikki Hansen's single in the fifth, and Mandy Cerqua singled home Whitney Foltz in the sixth for the 3-1 advantage. The Spartans, however, rallied in the seventh. Hailey Dryer doubled home Megan Burda and eventually scored on an Erin Bailey single. Katelynn Ashens and Donna Cozzie each hit two-run singles for the 7-3 lead.
The Pioneers loaded the bases with nobody out, but relief pitcher Katie Golien induced two foulouts and a strikeout to escape with the win.
In the opener, five Pioneer errors offset three home runs. Tera Burr led off the first with a home run, while Stefany Delifer hit a two-run shot and Hansen hit a homer over not only the 210-foot fence but also the 275-foot slow-pitch fence. In 11 years of the UWP Softball Complex, the slow-pitch fence has been cleared only twice, and Hansen has both blasts.
The Spartans, who had five runs in the second, improved to 11-13 with the sweep, while the Pioneers fell to 8-12.
