The UW-Platteville softball team got a jump on the 2008 season by opening a day earlier than expected. The Pioneers fell 10-7 to Shawnee State (Ohio) in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Sunday morning.
Taking advantage of the extra game, Coach Heather Townsend started sophomore third baseman Dru Schneider and eight freshmen to get them used to collegiate ball.
Katie Sutter, from Barneveld, threw all six innings and also went 3-3 with a three-run home run. Whitney Foltz also had a pair of hits, driving in two runs. Randee Wade and Lori Harmon each hit three-run HRs for the Bears, an NAIA team.
The Pioneer youngsters also dropped a JV game to Brookdale Community College. UWP has eight games in the next four games at the Snowbird Games, facing St. Joseph (N.Y.) and Hilbert (Pa.) Monday.
