UW-Platteville played its first northern games of the season Tuesday, but unfortunately ran into a talented Coe team. The Kohawks, ranked 14th in the NCAA III preseason poll, beat the Pioneers 10-1 and 12-0 in Cedar Rapids.
Erica Smothers had two home runs and six RBIs in the opener for Coe, who overcame a 1-0 Pioneer lead in the second. Patty Meoska singled home Becky Swanson for the game's first run. Coe scored four in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Dru Schneider had the only UWP hit in the nightcap off Coe pitcher Sonja Schwenker, who helped herself with a home run.
Coe improved to 14-6 and dropped the Pioneers to 5-6.
UWP is scheduled to play Cornell Thursday and Beloit Saturday, although the Pioneer softball field is still unplayable because of snow and wetness. Thursday's game may be played on the Pioneer Stadium's turf. Check the web site frequently for updates this spring.
